Chella van der Post, pathologist Radboud Nijmegen, The Netherlands

Biography
Rachel S. van der Post (nickname: Chella) is a histopathologist and Associate Professor of Hereditary Cancer at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Chella’s research is centered on rare and hereditary gastrointestinal tumors, with a particular focus on gastric cancer. Her research integrates histologic analysis, computational pathology, molecular cancer progression, and clinical approaches, providing a comprehensive view of hereditary cancer diagnostics and progression.
Summary of presentation
Patients with a genetic predisposition for hereditary diffuse-type gastric cancer (HDGC) are often advised to undergo a prophylactic gastrectomy in early adulthood, despite the lifelong consequences of this surgery. Examination of these resected stomachs frequently reveals multiple early-stage DGCs, providing a valuable model for studying the disease’s progression. Emerging data suggest that 60-70% of these patients may not progress to life-threatening, metastatic DGC. This presentation will discuss the histologic features and molecular characteristics observed in HDGC and highlight AI-based algorithms we have developed to analyze histologic slides, identifying distinct cellular clusters within HDGC lesions.
