Summary of presentation
The importance of endoscopic staging of gastric cancer has been changed. In the era of early laparoscopic surgery, the staging is important for the treatment of choice between open surgery and laparoscopic surgery, because less-invasive surgery was limited to the early gastric cancer. Today, laparoscopic surgery is applied not only to EGCs but also to AGCs, so the importance of staging was changed into the possibility of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). ESD is mostly performed for mucosal cancer and selected cases of minute submucosal cancers. In this presentation, I would discuss the current trend of endoscopic staging before the ESD or laparoscopic surgery.
